Geography

The cape is located on the southern tip of Gall Island, one of the most southerly islands of the archipelago. It is ice-free, the entire territory of the cape is occupied by sandstones and pebbles. In the southern part of the cape there are two outcrops, 25 and 60 meters high. The Cape is washed by the Barents Sea from the south and the Severo Bay from the north. Right behind Cape Tegethoff, deep into the island, the Zavaritsky rocks begin - a 15-kilometer ridge with heights of up to 500 meters.

History

The history of the development of the archipelago began from Cape Tegethoff. Franz Josef Land was discovered quite by accident: an Austrian expedition led by Karl Weyprecht and Julius Payer on the sailing-steam schooner Admiral Tegetthoff ( it’s Admiral Tegetthoff ) [1] , which set off in 1872 to open the Northeast Passage , was wiped out on August 30, 1873, it was brought to the shores of Gall Island in the area of Cape Tegetthoff. In memory of this historic landing on the cape, a monument to the schooner "Admiral Tegetgoff" was erected.

Due to the favorable location, other expeditions landed on the cape more than once. The ruins of wooden buildings that have remained from the expedition of American Walter Wellman , who arrived here in 1898, have survived to the present day.

In the mid-90s, a documentary about the discoverers of the islands was filmed in the vicinity of the cape by an Austrian film studio. [2]
