The Red Data Book of Republic Karelia is an annotated list of rare and endangered animals, plants and mushrooms of the Republic of Karelia . It was prepared by scientists of the Karelian Scientific Center of the Russian Academy of Sciences and Petrozavodsk State University and has passed three editions.

Editions
The first Red Book of Karelia, published in 1985, included information about 160 species of vascular plants, 22 species of fungi, 36 species of vertebrates and 31 species of insects.
The second edition included 390 plant species and subspecies (including 205 - vascular plants, 86 - mosses, 76 - lichens and 24 species of mushrooms), as well as 365 species of animals (of which mammals - 26, birds - 47, reptiles - 3, amphibians - 2, insects - 255, mollusks and higher crustaceans - 4).
The third edition, significantly supplemented and corrected, was released in early 2008 with a circulation of 2500 copies [1] [2] .
At the end of 2016, the list of species was updated: part of the status category was changed, 76 objects of flora and 35 objects of the animal world were excluded [3] .
Guard Categories
In the third edition, the state of species and populations was assessed by categories combining both the Red Book categories of the Russian Federation and the categories of the International Union for Conservation of Nature , which are correlated as follows [2] :
