Biography

Born in the Reichenberg castle near Reichelsheim . His father was the count servant Johann Konrad Nes, and his mother was Katarina Frederic Dorothea Esenbeck.

From his youth, he was interested in science, and after receiving his first education in Darmstadt, continued his studies at the University of Jena , having received a medical degree there in 1800.

For some time he was engaged in medicine, was a practicing physician, but his interest in botany grew more and more, and eventually he returned to academic research. In 1816 he became a member of the Leopoldina Academy, which at that time was one of the most prestigious institutions in Europe.

In 1817 he was appointed professor of botany at the University of Erlangen . Three years later, he became a professor of natural sciences at the University of Bonn , where he organized the Botanische Gärten der Friedrich-Wilhelms-Universität Bonn . In 1831 he was appointed botanist at the University of Breslau , where he headed the botanical garden . In 1818 he was elected president of the Academy of Leopoldina and remained in this position until the end of his life.

His last official act as president of the German Academy of Leopoldina was the adoption of Charles Darwin as a full academician. Foreign member of the Bavarian Academy of Sciences (1835) [4] .

Policy

In 1848, he began to show great political activity and participated in the foundation of the workers' union in Breslau (Wroclaw). On August 23, he was elected to the Prussian National Assembly as president of the Berlin Workers Congress ( Berliner Arbeiterkongresses ). He was constantly watched by the police because of his "socio-political" lectures, which he gave in the spring of 1849. In 1851, due to conflicts with the government, he was deprived of his professorship and pension in Breslau . He died seven years later on March 16, 1858 in extreme poverty.

Personal life

In August 1802, he married Wilhelmina to Louise Katarina von Dietfurt, but she died on September 22, 1803, and since then Christian Gottfried Daniel has changed his surname from Nees to Nees von Esenbeck.

After a short sad time, on March 5, 1804, Esenbeck married Elisabeth Jacobina von Metting. They had three daughters and two sons.
