History
By 1990, it became apparent that the existing public transport system in Izmir could no longer meet the needs of the city’s growing population. Construction began in 1995 and was successfully completed in about 4 years. The metro was opened on May 22, 2000 in test mode, and regular operation began on August 25, 2000 . To date, the total cost of the system amounted to 600 million US dollars. The first metro line partly included a railway line to the Bornova area.
