History
Ghostscript was originally written by L. Peter Deutsch in 1986 for the GNU Project, and released under the GNU General Public License . He later formed Aladdin Enterprises to license Ghostscript under a private license. Ghostscript is currently owned by Artifex Software and is supported by its programmers. The latest version of this software suite is again available under the GPL , but can also be licensed for use in private projects for a fee.
Features
Ghostscript can convert PostScript files to files of various graphic formats, display interpreted content and print on printers that do not support PostScript; It is often used as a “virtual printer” to create documents in PDF or PostScript format from programs that do not support conversion to these formats.
It can be used as a raster image processor ( RIP ) for computer raster printers — for example, as an input filter for LPD — or as a RIP mechanism for PDF or PostScript viewers.
Since Ghostscript is an interpreter of the language, it can also be used as a universal programming environment. Ghostscript has been ported to many operating systems, including Unix , Linux , Mac OS , OpenVMS , Microsoft Windows , MS-DOS , FreeDOS , OS / 2, and AmigaOS .
