History
Founded in 1889, SAP Open is one of the oldest tennis tournaments in the world and the second oldest in the United States, after a tournament that later evolved into the US Open Tennis Championships . The tournament was founded earlier than the Australian Open and the French Open . The first years of the tournament were held in Monterey . The main venues for San Jose were Berkeley (over 40 times) and San Francisco (over 30 times) in turn.
For a long time, the tournament was known as the Pacific Coast Championships . After the start of the Open Era, the tournament was replaced by a number of sponsors; the latter included Volvo , Transamerica , Siebel Systems and Sybase , and the tournament is currently sponsored by SAP . Until 1992, it was carried out on carpet, starting in 1992 - on artificial hard surface.
Since the beginning of the ATP tour, the tournament has belonged to the basic category: first ATP World, then ATP International, and since 2009 ATP 250. Until 1989, the tournament was held in September, after the US Open, and in 1990 was moved to February. The last year was 2013 , after which the rights to the losing tournament were transferred to the Brazilian organizers [1] .
Among the winners of the tournament were Grand Slam winners Don Budge and Rod Laver , Olympic champions Andre Agassi , Todd Woodbridge and Mark Woodford , as well as a number of the world's first racquets. Agassi and John McEnroe won the tournament five times in the Open Era (McEnroe is also an eight-time winner of the pair tournament), and the record holder for the tournament in the number of singles wins is Bill Johnston , who excelled in it ten times. Until 1971, both male and female competitions were held as part of the tournament; In 1972, the men's and women's tournaments were divided: the women's tournament was relocated to Auckland . The women's tournament in Berkeley was also won by two Grand Slam owners, Maureen Connolly and Maria Bueno .
