Biography

Born in 1941 in Et-Tall , near Damascus, in a Sunni peasant family [1] [2] [3] [4] . He graduated from the University of Damascus. [1] . He received a Ph.D. in Arabic language and literature from Moscow State University [4] .

Member of the Ba'ath Party since 1966. He was a member of the Arab Teachers' Union and its Secretary General for Cultural Affairs. Under Hafez, Assad was the governor of a number of governorates: Dar'a (1980-1986), Al-Hasaka (1976-1993), Aleppo (1993-2000).

Shortly before the death of President Hafez al-Assad, he was appointed prime minister for economic reform and the fight against corruption . The new president, Bashar al-Assad , left him in office. In 2003, Mero resigned.
