Haiphong [1] ( Vietnamese. Hải Phòng - Haiphong [2] ) is a large city in the north of Vietnam . It is located in the Hongha River Delta , on the Kinmon River, which flows into the Bakbo Bay of the South China Sea . The population of 1.8 million inhabitants, the third largest in the country after Ho Chi Minh and Hanoi . One of the five cities of Vietnam is centrally subordinate.

Content
History
The exact time of foundation is unknown, but the Haiphong port has existed for at least several centuries. After the colonization of Vietnam, France became one of the most important French naval bases, received the nickname "Tonkin Venice". During World War II, it was occupied by Japan .
In October 1954, it became the starting point of Operation Flight to Freedom , during which 293,000 refugees were evacuated from the communist North Vietnam to Saigon , the capital of South Vietnam , by US Navy ships. In 1972, it was badly damaged by the bombing of American aircraft, as it was the only major port in North Vietnam.
Economics
After the war it was rebuilt as a large commercial and industrial center. Fishing center. It is one of the starting points for tourists traveling to Halong Bay.
Transport
Haiphong is located 108 km [3] northeast of Hanoi and is connected to it by a railway line and a toll motorway. Seaport, the second largest in Vietnam. Catby International Airport .
