Essedarius is a type of gladiator , perhaps first brought to Rome by Julius Caesar .
A gladiator (usually with a bow and arrow) stands on a chariot, shooting an opponent with a bow. Most often, the essedarius sweeps the enemy off the ground with horses, and then finishes off. If the arrows ran out of the essedaria, he was obliged to snatch a melee weapon and dismount. For the Essedarians, in most cases, the armor covered part of his body, and the horse driver had the right to dress as he pleased. The usual tactic of this gladiator when breaking a chariot was to use one of the horses.
