Biography
Bishop
The first postmark in the world was introduced by Bishop during his tenure as general postmaster of England. It was a simple round stamp with a diameter of 13 mm , divided by one horizontal line into two halves: on one with two Latin letters the month was indicated, on the other - on the day (day of the month) of departure [3] [5] . Bishop's oldest known stamp is MA / 17 . He marked the letter of incoming correspondence, which was delivered to London on May 17, 1661, and sent from Yarmouth on May 15, 1661 [5] .

Since 1673, a stamp with a diameter of 14 mm began to be used. The date on it, as a rule, was indicated at the top, and the month at the bottom.
Under Bishop, postage stamps also appeared, including an indication of the amount to be received from the recipient of the letter (for example, “ D / 9 ” - 9 pence [6] , “ S / 1 ” - 1 shilling [7] ). Similar stamps were used in London , Edinburgh , Dublin , India and the English colonies in North America [8] .
In addition, during the time of Bishop, the first advertising postmark appeared, the text of which read [8] :

In almost unchanged form, Bishop's postal stamps lasted until 1788 [3] .
In a still life of c. (C. 1696), with a picture of a correspondence board, a letter is printed ( in the center ), marked with a Bishop stamp with the date November 25
