Biography

Baldwin was educated at Northwestern College in Naperville ( Illinois , USA ). After completing his studies in 1885, he traveled around Europe by bicycle for two years.

In 1887, Baldwin became the director of a small high school in Missouri (USA), after some time he headed a high school in the city of Osui-g ( Kansas , USA).

Passion for traveling in 1891 led Baldwin to work in the US Federal Weather Service, and then to participate in the second expedition of Robert Peary from 1893 to 1895 to Greenland as a meteorologist .

In 1898 - 1899, Baldwin led one of the expedition teams, ( eng. Walter Wellman ), a Chicago journalist and arctic research enthusiast, on the first American expedition to Franz Josef Land.

In 1901, Baldwin became the head of the expedition to the North Pole, funded by William Ziegler ( eng. William Ziegler ). The Baldwin-Ziegler polar expedition was superbly trained and equipped (51 people, 420 dogs, 15 ponies, 60 sleds) [1] , but during its course Baldwin was removed from the leadership by Ziegler. After wintering in 1901-1902 on Franz Josef Land, the expedition was curtailed and its members returned to the mainland.

In the following years, Baldwin conducted lecture tours of the United States. He died in 1933 as a result of a car accident in Washington . Buried in Osuigo.
