Beginning of military career
From April 1926 he served in the police, since 1933 - senior lieutenant of police.

World War II
In May 1940, participated in the seizure of the Netherlands, was awarded the Iron Crosses of both degrees.
From August 1940 - commander of the parachute battalion, from April 1941 - Major.
Participated in the conquest of Greece (April 1941) and in the landing on the island of Crete in May 1941. Awarded the Knight's Cross.
From November 1941 - on the southern sector of the Eastern Front. Fighting in the area of Stalino, on the river Mius. From April 1942 - on the Leningrad front.
Since July 1942 - battles in Africa, as part of the Ramke brigade. In December 1942, Major Krokh was awarded the Golden German Cross. Since January 1943 - Lieutenant Colonel. Since March 1943 - commander of the parachute regiment.
In January-April 1944 - battles in Ukraine. In April 1944 - awarded Oak leaves to the Knight's Cross and promoted to the rank of colonel.
From May 1944 - Commander of the 2nd Parachute Division (in Normandy). Since August 1944 - the defense of Brest (in France). In September 1944 he was awarded with Swords (No. 96) to the Knight's Cross with Oak Leaves and promoted to the rank of Major General. September 18, 1944 captured in American.
After the war
Released from captivity in 1948. In January 1956 he re-entered military service in the Bundeswehr . Commanded the 1st Airborne Division. In retirement from April 1962.
