History

Gyongsando's predecessor is a province created during the Koryo Dynasty by uniting the provinces of Yongnam , Sannam and Yondon .

Gyeongsando got its name in 1314 . The name comes from the first letters of the main cities of the province - Gyeongju ( 경주 ) and Sanju ( 상주 ).

In 1895, Gyeongsando was disbanded, and in its place appeared the Andon ( Andon-bu; 안 동부 ) areas in the north, Daegu ( Daegu-bu; 대구 부 ) in the central part, Chinju ( Chinju-bu; 진주 부 ) in the south west, and Tonne ( Tonne-bu; 동래부 modern Busan ) in the southeast.

In 1896, Andon, Daegu, and the northern part of Tonne were united to form the Gyeongsangbuk-do province , and Jinju and the southern part of Tonne became the province of Gyeongsangnam-do . Now both provinces are part of South Korea .

Geography

In the west, Gyeongsando bordered on the provinces of Chollado and Chuncheondo , in the north - with Gangwon-do , in the south it was washed by the Korean Strait , and in the east - by the Sea of Japan (Koreans themselves call it the East Sea ). The Taeksan and Sobeksan mountain ranges pass through the region, and the main water resource is the Naktong river basin.

The largest cities in the region are Busan , Daegu, and Ulsan . Other famous cities are Gyeongju (the former capital of the Kingdom of Silla ), Andon, Yongju , Sanju, Gimcheon , Miryan , Gimhae , Changwon (the capital of Gyeongsangnam-do), Masan and Jinju.

The region in which Gyeongsando was located is sometimes called " Yongnam ."
