Pavel Ivanovich Stradins (in the Russian version also Stradins , Latvian. Pauls Stradiņš - Pauls Stradins ; January 17, 1896 , Viesite - August 14, 1958 , Riga ) - Latvian surgeon , oncologist , academician of the Academy of Sciences of the Latvian SSR (1946), corresponding member of the Academy of Medical Sciences USSR (1945), professor at the University of Latvia and the Riga Medical Institute . Founder of clinical oncology in Latvia. He headed the Second Riga City Clinic and the Institute of Biology and Experimental Medicine. Founder of the Museum of the History of Medicine in Latvia.

Biography
Pauls Stradins was born on January 17, 1896 in Vyesita (formerly Ekengrave), in the family of a craftsman. He studied at local rural schools, at Jekabpils school of commerce, at Dubulti private gymnasium, in 1914 he graduated from the Riga Alexander School with a gold medal. From 1914 to 1919, Pauls Stradins studied in Petrograd, at the Military Medical Academy , graduated with honors, later improved his knowledge and defended his thesis on "Lesions of the peripheral nerves and their treatment" under the guidance of Professor S. P. Fedorov (1869-1936) in Hospital Surgery Clinic.
Returning to Latvia, from 1924 he worked under the direction of Professor Jekabs Alksnis (1870-1957) at the Surgical Clinic of the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Latvia. In 1925 and 1926 he trained in the USA and in England as a Rockefeller Foundation scholarship holder. In 1927 he defended his second dissertation on the topic “Etiology, clinic and therapy of the so-called gangraena spontanea”.
For his principled views, during the German occupation he was relieved of his duties as medical director of the Second Riga City Hospital and in 1942, was removed from the post of scientific director of the Cancer Hospital.
He died on August 14, 1958 in Riga. He was buried in the Forest Cemetery .
Medicine is a profession, science and art at the same time. Only a good person can be a good doctor. Love is the highest medicine. After me I must leave the clinic, the surgical school and the museum.

Family
The son of academician P. Stradins Jānis Stradins (born 1933) is a chemical scientist, academician of the Latvian Academy of Sciences, a historian of science and culture.
The grandson of academician P. Stradins, Andrei Erglis, is a cardiac surgeon and scientist, professor, head of the cardiocenter of the University Clinical Hospital .
