About Team

Basketball club "Petrel" is the two-time champion of the USSR and the most titled club in Leningrad after Spartak .

The team was founded in 1936 on the basis of the club of the Union of Cooperation and the State Trade (SKiG). Men's and women's teams participated in the first club championship of the USSR (1937). In that year, the men's team took 5th place in the championship, and in the seasons of 1938 and 1940 did not suffer a single defeat [1] .

After the war, the male student team of Leningrad performed in the major league under the name LETI (1951-52), "Science" (1953-54) and, finally, again "Petrel" (1955-61). The best achievement is 4th place in the 1958 national championship. In 1971, the men's team last participated in the USSR Championship, the women's team continued to perform until the 1990s.
