DRI ( Dirty Rotten Imbeciles ) is an American crossover thrash band formed in 1982 in Houston , Texas . The first hardcore punk-based DRIs soon sharply “metallicized” the sound ( Sounds described it as super - fast heavy metal ) [1] and - along with Suicidal Tendencies , Corrosion of Conformity and SOD - formed the core of the crossover thrash genre, of its own title received from the album DRI Crossover [2] .

DRI did not have massive commercial success (although two of their albums were included in the Billboard 200 [3] , three in the UK Indie Chart , and 4 of a Kind rose here to # 5 in 1988 ) [1] , but they had a significant impact on development hardcore and thrash scenes [4] .
The group continues to perform, but since 1995 (when the Full Speed Ahead album was released), they have released only one track, “Against Me” (2004), distributed on the Internet.

Group History
The DRI was formed on May 2, 1982 in Houston, Texas by members of the shortly before-disbanding hardcore punk band Suburbanites. The first line-up included: Spike Cassidy ( Eng. Spike Cassidy , guitar ), Kurt Brecht ( Eng. Kurt Brecht , vocals), Eric Brecht ( Eng. Eric Brecht , drums ) and Dennis Johnson ( Eng. Dennis Johnson , bass guitar ) In essence, this was the Suburbanites lineup, joined by guitarist Cassidy.
The group began rehearsing at the home of Kurt and Eric's parents. The neighbors began to complain about the noise, giving its manufacturers all kinds of epithets. One of them ("Dirty rotten idiots") went directly to the name of the group. Two months later, on July 2, 1982 , the band played their first concert at Houston's Joe Star's OMNI.
On September 6 and 7, 1982, DRI recorded their debut Dirty Rotten EP, 22 of which, with a total duration of 18 minutes, fit on a seven-inch disc. The pressed first edition - one thousand copies - subsequently became a rarity. Great demand led to the fact that the release was repackaged and in 1983 came out in a 12-inch format, like Dirty Rotten LP.
In 1983, the DRI relocated to San Francisco [4] , where they lived in a touring van. Dennis Johnson left the group and was replaced by Sebastian Amok . A few months later, DRI became members of the Rock Against Reagan tour, where they performed, in particular, with Dead Kennedys . At the end of the tour, Emoc gave way to Josh Pappe.
Following the release of Violent Pacification EP in 1984 , the band toured France. Eric Brecht got married and left the squad. He was replaced by Felix Griffin. In the same year, the band’s material was included in the PEACE antiwar charity release, along with songs from hardcore and punk bands such as Crass , DOA , Dead Kennedys and MDC [5] .
DRI's second full-length album, Dealing With It , was released in March 1985; it was followed by a long tour. In the course of work on the record, Josh left the group; The bass guitarist in the studio was partly Spike Cassidy, partly guest musician Mike Offender (from The Offenders). In Dealing With It, the group introduced heavy metal elements into its arsenal, preserving mostly thrashcore sound [2] . Recorded on April 26, 1986 at the Los Angeles Olympic Auditorium, the concert was released on video under the title Live At the Olympic .
In their third album Crossover (1987), released on Metal Blade, the band finally closed with heavy metal camp. Her compositions became longer and slower, the arrangements became more complicated. In the press, DRI were declared the main representatives of the "crossover" movement; At her concerts, she began to attract, in addition to the previous hardcore audience, punks , skinheads and metal fans. On June 27, 1987 in New York , during the Crossover tour, the group recorded the video The Live At The Ritz .
In the fourth album, 4 of a Kind (1988), metal trends finally prevailed. Largely due to the success of the single and the video “Suit and Tie Guy,” the album was the first to enter the national charts (# 116) [3] (in the UK Indie Charts, it rose to 5th place) [1] . A year later, Pappe accepted the invitation from Gang Green, and John Menor , a former member of Mantas, made his debut in Thrash Zone (1989), the band’s most metal album that critics consider to be the strongest [2] . The singles "Beneath the Wheel" and "Abduction" got a rotation on MTV, and the album also entered the charts (# 140) [3] .
Thrash Zone was the band's latest release on Metal Blade. In 1990, Felix Griffin left the group and the most productive period in the history of the group came to an end [2] . His place was taken by Rob Rampy the fourth ( English Rob Rampy IV ). Cassidy brought to life his own label for Rotten Records, which released Definition (1992). The album partially returned the group to its punk roots, but it turned out that she had practically lost her old audience [2] .
With the succeeding Menor Chumley Porter, the band recorded Full Speed Ahead (1995), after which the band toured for several years on the “fuel” of old material. Porter left in 1999, with Harald Oimoen replacing him ( English Harald Oimoen ), the group continued (according to Allmusic) its existence as a “wandering army” [2] .
