Linda Benglis created vibrant floor sculptures in the 1960s and 1970s as a response to minimalism , dominated by men, with an abundance of mathematical and technological allusions inherent in this current. First, a series of stuck latex sculptures stuck to the floor. Then Benglis began to experiment by mixing pigment and resin, then adding a catalyst and water, resulting in a foaming polyurethane, which was poured onto the frames of various shapes (they were the only element previously set). Natural-organic volumes had to be produced immediately, the artist often invited viewers to observe this process.

Benglis believed that she was little represented in the modern art system, driven by men. Then she made the notorious gesture, starring in 1974 in a series of photographs that parody the typically masculine look at women. In the final photograph of the cycle, she posed naked in dark glasses and with a dildo set against her pubis. This latest photo of the cycle was published in the ArtForum in a November 1974 issue.

In 1971, Benglis began collaborating with Robert Morris by creating Benglis 'video Mumble (1972) and Morris' Exchange (1973).
