Origin

Ismail Ali 's father, Berkok, was a muhajir from the North Caucasus and came from an aristocratic family of the Dzherestievs ( Zherestievs ). He was the brother of Junus Jereshtiev and Osman Jereshtiev. Together with his other brother Yusuf, he, for political reasons, after the end of the Russo-Turkish war of 1877-1878, moved to the Ottoman Empire .

Ali Berkok Zhereshtiev was an atalyk of the famous Balkar prince Ismail Urusbiev and at the time of relocation he rose to the rank of captain in the Russian imperial army . After the resettlement, the representatives of the clan founded their settlement on the territory of the Ottoman Empire in the Kayseri region near the city of Pinarbashi and named it Jereştey , later it was transformed into the Yaglypinar quarter. Youth

He lost his parents early, but despite all the difficulties, Ismail Berkok still graduated from elementary village school, came to Istanbul and unlearned in high school. After graduating from school in 1907 he entered the Ottoman military school. In 1908, Ismail Berkok received a military rank - senior lieutenant . He graduated from college in 1910 with the rank of captain . Upon completion of training, he was sent to serve in the Bureau of the General Staff [1]

World War I

Ismail Berkok met the First World War in Macedonia on the Balkan Front. Then he participated in operations and military operations on the Caucasus and Middle East fronts, in particular in Iraq . Two of his siblings, Ahmed and Mahmoud Berkok, who died in the Battle of Canakkal, also participated in the battles of the First World War.

North Caucasus

After the February revolution in the Russian Empire , in the North Caucasus and Transcaucasia , separatist forces intensified, dreaming of a single and free Caucasus. In support of this speech of the peoples of the Caucasus, after the signing of the friendship agreement between the Ottoman empires and the Mountain Republic on June 8, 1918 , the Ottoman leadership sent an expeditionary force of 652 soldiers and officers to Dagestan , led by Ismail Berkok, assembled mainly from the descendants of the Muhajirs. The purpose of the detachment was the formation of the Islamic Army of the Caucasus from the highlanders themselves. In support of the detachment, by the end of October 1918, the 15th infantry division had been transferred to the Caucasus under the leadership of General Yusuf Izzet Pasha , which rapidly occupied Baku , Derbent and Petrovsk ( Makhachkala ). Participation in the Turkish War of Independence (1919-1922)

With the start of the war for independence, Turkey returns from the North Caucasus and since 1920 has been actively involved in the war on the side of Mustafa Kemal (Ataturk) .

In the Republican period

After the end of the war of independence, he participated in various military missions of the republican government. In 1924 he received the rank of lieutenant colonel . In 1937 he received the title of Brigadier General of the Republic of Turkey. In 1936, became chairman of the Council of Military History. With the outbreak of World War II, the Ministry of Defense of Turkey was appointed to the Mobilization Department. Since 1943, a member of the military court of cassation. By the time he retired in 1946, he was a member of the Supreme Military Court of the Republic of Turkey.

After resignation

After resigning in 1950, he was elected to the Turkish Grand National Assembly from the Democratic Party from his native Kayseri region. Four years later, he was again successfully elected to parliament, but on May 11, 1954, after an operation in London, General Ismail Berkok dies. He was buried with honors in the capital of Turkey, Ankara, at the Jebeeji Asri cemetery.
