He achieved his first success at a side tournament in Hastings ( 1895 ) - 2-3 places (for G. Marotsi ). In 1899, the tournament in Amsterdam - 1st place (15 points out of 15). In 1902, at the tournament in Hanover - 3rd place (behind D. Yanovsky and G. Pilsbury ); 9-time champion of Great Britain ( 1905 - 1911 , 1924 , 1925 ); participant in a number of matches between the United Kingdom and the United States by telegraph ( 1896-1911 ).
