Karppinen won three consecutive gold medals in the individual races at the 1976 , 1980 and 1984 Summer Olympics. Pertti repeated the achievement of the famous Soviet rower Vyacheslav Ivanov , who won in the same discipline at the Olympics in 1956 , 1960 , 1964 .
