Length - 180 km, average water flow about 10 m³ / s. The cities of Wiener Neustadt , Brook an der Light (Austria) and Mosonmagyarovar (Hungary) are located on the river. The latter stands at the confluence of the Light in the lateral sleeve of the Danube - the Moson Danube . There are also a number of smaller villages on the river.
A river forms in the Fischbach Alps west of Wiener Neustadt . The general direction of the current is east, near Nikkelsdorf it enters the territory of Hungary. Between Ebenfurt and Laitaprodersdorf and between Brook an der Lait and Gattendorf, the river forms the border between Lower Austria and Burgenland , which corresponds to the border between Austria and Hungary until 1921. On the right bank of the river near the Hungarian border, the mountains of Laitagebirge stretch.
Several channels that feed small hydropower plants leave the river. In some areas, these canals take most of the Light water. Several rivers flow into the river, including the Shed River.
The Laita River gave its name to Cisleitania and Transitleitania , the two constituent parts of Austria-Hungary , formed under the Austro-Hungarian Agreement of 1867 . The words Cisleytaniya and Translaytaniya literally mean "on this" and "on the other side of Leyta."
