The capital of Altshooga, the city of Sunnesjoen is located on the island of Alsten . On the island is the ridge of the Seven Sisters . Local legend made this chain of peaks seven sisters, in which two neighboring peaks are twin sisters.
The island is connected to the mainland by the Helgeland bridge on the route of the Norwegian national highway R17.
Title
The municipality (originally a parish ) was named after the old Alstaheug farm ( Old Norwegian : Alastarhaugr ), since the first church was built there. The first part is the genitive case of the name of the island of Alöst (now Alsten), the ending is the word haugr, which means a hill or a mound .
Coat of Arms
The current coat of arms was adopted on August 8, 1986. The emblem shows the ridge of the Seven Sisters , and its reflection in the clear waters of the fjord. [one]
History
Alstaheug was officially recognized as a commune on January 1, 1838 (see formannskapsdistrikt ). Later, three communes were separated from it: Höröy and Tjötta (together with Wevelstad in 1862) and Sannessøyen (together with Leirfjord in 1899). However, Tjetta and Sannessjohen were again united with Alstaheug on January 1, 1965. The territory of Noordwick was transferred from Alstahög to the Heröy commune in 1864. The mainland territory of Alstaheug became subordinate to Vefsn in 1995.
In Alstaheug there is a medieval church in which the poet and minister Petter Dass worked in the 1700s. Tjetta , another island, is the site on which the famous Viking Hårek lived in the 11th century.
Bird Watching
Slightly south of the Arctic Circle , in a region known as Outer Helgeland , Alstaheug has ideal conditions for observing birds in their natural habitat. One of the best places for bird watching is Chietta . Here is a small reserve Ostyonna.
Climate
The climate of the commune is oceanic. February is always the coldest month; August is the warmest. October is as warm as May. The average annual rainfall is 1,510 mm in Sunnesjoen and 1,020 mm in Tjetta. The wettest period is from September to January, when 150 mm of precipitation falls each month, while in May-June, the rainfall is 60-70 mm per month. [2]
