History and celebration
The choice of the date for the celebration of the Day of the Navigator of the Navy of the Russian Federation fell on January 25 not by accident. It was on this day in 1701 that the emperor of the Russian Empire, Peter the Great, issued a decree in which, in particular, it was said: " To be mathematical and navigational, that is, nautical artisanal arts of learning ". To implement the royal will, the School of Mathematical and Navigational Sciences was created, which is located in the city of Moscow , in the Sukharev Tower .
On July 15, 1996, the Commander- in- Chief of the Navy of the Russian Federation, Admiral of the Fleet Gromov, Felix Nikolayevich issued Order No. 253 “ On the introduction of annual holidays and professional days in the specialty ”, according to which the “Navigator Day of the Navy of Russia” followed (starting with 1997 ) to celebrate on the day of the Petrovsky Decree, which, de facto, founded the navigator service of the Navy of the Russian Empire [2] . Prior to this, the “Day of the Naval Navigator of the Russian Navy” was celebrated twice a year: March 21 and September 23 (on the day of the spring and autumn equinoxes, respectively) [3] .
