Biography

Born into a Jewish family of German descent [1] . Subsequently adopted Presbyterianism [2] .

After receiving a bachelor's degree in business administration, he founded a successful oil and gas company in Houston.

Professionally engaged in sailing. World Champion 1969 in the Dragon class and 1971 in the Soling class.

In Texas, he met future US President George W. Bush , later becoming one of his main associates in the election campaign. Raised funds for the senate campaign lost by Bush in 1970.

Mosbacher’s political activity began in the 1960s, when he began raising funds for the Republican Party in South Texas , and in 1968 he worked in the campaign headquarters of future US President Richard Nixon . Later, he participated in the election campaign of the future US President Gerald Ford .

In 1988, he was the chief fundraiser of the presidential campaign of George W. Bush, after the election of which he was appointed Minister of Commerce to the post of head of state. Mosbacher was one of the initiators of the signing of the agreement on the creation of the North American Free Trade Association (NAFTA), signed on December 17, 1992. This agreement was an "expanded" version of the agreement on free trade, concluded between the United States and Canada in 1988, and provided for the inclusion of Mexico in a zone free from customs barriers.

In 2008, he also participated in the election campaign of Republican presidential candidate John McCain .

Robert Mosbacher was married four times, he has four children. His son, Robert Mosbacher Jr. , headed the American Overseas Private Investment Corporation (OPIC), specializing in investments in new and emerging markets, including in Russia. In particular, the Mosbacher Jr corporation credited IKEA, Nizhnekamskneftekhim, Sibakadembank, DeltaCredit Bank, NBD Bank, Promsvyazbank and a number of other enterprises.
