Geography
Pochinkovsky district is located in the southeastern part of the Nizhny Novgorod region , it borders with the Lukoyanovsky and Bolsheboldinsky districts of the Nizhny Novgorod region, as well as the Ichalkovsky, Lambirsky and Staroshaygovsky districts of the Republic of Mordovia .
The area of the district is 196059 hectares .
History
The settlement of the Middle Volga region, including the territory of the modern Pochinkovsky district, began in ancient times. The stone axes, spearheads and arrowheads stored in the Pochinov Museum clearly demonstrate this. In the historical era, the first settlers here were the Finno-Ugric peoples of Erzya and Moksha . In the ancient forest, cuts and repairs were made for the settlements, and from this comes the name Repair. For a long time, Mordovian lands were the scene of fierce clashes between the indigenous Mordovian population, the Volga Bulgarians and the Russian princes.
In 1152, Prince Yuri Dolgoruky arrived at the site of the current Gorodets with his retinue, here he encountered the Mordovian tribes: Erzey, Moksha and Karayats . The Mordva fought with the prince's squad, but was defeated and driven back south of the Ra ( Volga ) River , and the Erzya tribe settled mainly in the area of modern Arzamas . Here they had the main camp of Erzya-mas, hence the name Arzamas. The Moksha tribe went even further south and settled on the territory of the modern Republic of Mordovia .
During this movement, some Erzya and Mokshak groups settled in the territory of the present Pochinok district.
The emergence and development of Russian settlements in these parts went along with the Mordovian settlements due to the expulsion of Mordovians from the best lands.
The active penetration of Russians into Mordovian lands began after the foundation of Nizhny Novgorod in 1221. The Nizhny Novgorod princes strongly encouraged the settlement of Mordovian lands with their subjects.
Since 1578, the state serif (fortified border) began to pass through the territory of the modern Pochinkovsky district, on which the Mordovians , then the Tatars carried out guard service for bread and money wages.
