Rail transport in Benin - rail transport in the state of Benin .
The first Cotonou - Save railway line was built in 1912. In 1959, by agreement between the governments of Benin and Niger, a joint organization of railways and other modes of transport was created. The length of the country's railways is 579 km [1] , a track with a width of 1000 mm is used . Light rails with linear masses of 22 and 30 kg are used, the track is laid on metal sleepers.
Three railway lines: Cotonou - Parakou (438 km), Cotonou - Pobe (107 km), Cotonou - Segboroue (34 km) are served by 8 diesel locomotives Asthom BB500 and 12 Asthom BB600 . There are also 296 freight cars , 31 passenger cars in the Benin Railways Park.
Benin participates in the AfricaRail project.
