History

For the first time, the title of Count Oson appears in 1127, when this title is mentioned by Guillaume III (IV) , Count Macon and Vienne, the youngest son of Etienne I the Brave , Count Macon and Vienne and the Palatine Count of Burgundy. This year, Guillaume's older brother, Renault III , became the Palatine of Burgundy. After the death of Renault III in 1148, the county of Burgundy was inherited by his young daughter Beatrice I (c. 1145–1184). Guillaume III, who tried to appropriate the title of Count of Burgundy by imprisoning his niece, but German King Conrad III defended her rights and sent her Duke Bertold IV von Tseringen to be freed. As a result, Guillaume was forced to be content with Macon, Viennese and Oson.

After the death of Guillaume III in 1156, his possessions were divided between his sons. The eldest, Gerot (Gerard) I , received Macon and Vienne , and the youngest, Etienne II - the county of Oson and the lord of Trave.

Etienne II's son, Etienne III , was one of the powerful feudal lords in the county of Burgundy . In 1186, he married Beatrice , daughter of Guillaume II , Count of Chalon , and niece of Emperor Frederick I Barbarossa . Thanks to this marriage, Etienne's son, Jean I the Wise , inherited the county of Chalon after the death of his mother in 1227 .

After the palatine of Burgundy in 1205 became Otton II Meransky , alien in origin, language and culture, and practically did not take any part in the management of the county, living mainly in his German possessions. Therefore, Count Hoson Etienne III, supported by the King of France , the Duke of Burgundy and the Archbishop of Besançon , constantly led the local feudal lords unhappy with this situation. In 1225-1227, this resulted in a real war, in which the Duke of Burgundy and Count of Champagne also took part.

In 1237, the son of Etienne III, Jean the Wise, who had by then become one of the most influential people in the county of Burgundy, exchanged the duke of Burgundy, Hugo III Chalon and Oson, for Senoria Salen and a number of other possessions, which brought him great wealth thanks to his salt marshes, as well as allowed to intervene more actively in burgundy affairs. In addition, these possessions allowed him to collect tolls, since it was through them that the road from Italy to France passed. As a result, the county of Oson was included in the duchy of Burgundy.
