Biography
Childhood
Kiira Korpi was born in the family of the famous Finnish hockey player Rauno Korpi (born 1951), the Finnish ice hockey champion in the Tappara club ( Tampere ). Later, already as a coach, he led the women's hockey team of Finland to bronze medals at the 1998 Olympic Games in Nagano . Kiire predicted a great future in hockey, but she chose the less popular figure skating in Finland. “I'm glad I didn’t do hockey. My older sister Petra and my friends were engaged in figure skating, so I wanted to ride with them, ”she said.
Kiira went ice skating when she was five years old. She quickly improved in figure skating; she performed her first triple jump, Salchow , when she was 11 years old.
She made her debut in international beginner competitions in 2002. In the seasons of 2002-2003 and 2003-2004. participated in junior competitions, taking prizes, including the first in the championship of the northern countries. Kiira Korpi quickly became one of the brightest and most promising young athletes in Finnish figure skating. She captivated fans of figure skating not only with her skating skills, but also with her lively character and classic beauty in the style of young Grace Kelly , always with a smile on her face.
2005-2007
In 2005, Kiira Korpi made her debut in the adult European Championship , taking 13th place.
The European Championship in Lyon in January 2006 was marked by her excellent performance on the international stage. The 17-year-old skater skated in a breathtaking free program to complete the championship sixth, having climbed seven places up compared to the previous year. She went around her two teammates and secured herself one of two tickets for Finland to the Olympic Games in Turin . She said that she loves jumping, and she likes to compete. Already at that time, she knew how to perform almost all triple jumps, including triple lutz , which she considered her favorite. She performed a cascade of two triple sheepskin coats and a combination of a triple salchow - a triple sheepskin coat and the first of the Finnish skaters successfully completed a cascade of two triple jumps at the World Cup.
Since about 2000, Kiira has been training under the leadership of Maaret Siromaa and Susanna Haaral. During the training season, it takes about 2-3 hours a day, six days a week. In June and July, when the skating rink in Tampere is closed, she usually moves to another city or abroad to continue skating. So, in 2005, Kiira practiced in California , and in the summer of 2006 she trained in Tartu ( Estonia ) with Russian coaches. About six hours a week, she trains outside the ice, including gymnastics and choreography. In summer, running, cycling and roller skating are also added to her training program. Kiira likes to skate to the music of various styles. She chooses music in consultation with her trainer, and usually changes only one program per year.
At the 2007 European Championships in Warsaw, Kiira became a bronze medalist. There is a certain merit of the Russian coach Alexei Mishin , who advised Kiira and her trainers [1] .
2008/2009 Season
In the summer of 2008, Kiira actively trained - in her native Tampere , then in Estonian Tartu and in Swedish Lulea [2] . Later, however, Kiira had health problems; she suffered from leg pain caused by excessive exercise stress. Due to these problems, she did not train in August and was unable to recover for the Finlandia Trophy tournament [3] , and also missed the Grand Prix tournaments.
Kiira fully recovered for the national championship and won a gold medal in December 2008. At the 2009 European Championships, at the beginning of the free program, Kiira fell, hitting her back against the rink, after which she was forced to stop the music; She completed the rental of her program, but in the end she took only fifth place. At the Winter Universiade in Harbin, she won a short program with an advantage over rivals of about 6 points, but in an arbitrary one she broke the cascade and two more jumps and became the fourth; the amount of points, however, was enough for third place.
Season 2009/2010
In January 2010, after a short program, Kiira took the second place at the European Championships , but skipped the free program unsuccessfully (fifth place), her final place was only fourth.
Season 2010/2011
In the 2010/2011 season, Kiira's short program rides to the music of Harold Arlen Somewhere Over the Rainbow (from The Wizard of Oz); music of any program - “ Evita ” by Andrew Lloyd Webber [4] .
In December 2010, Kiira won first place in the Finnish Championship (this victory was her second career victory in the national championship).
In January 2011, in Switzerland , for the second time in her sports career, she became the third at the European Championships . Occupying the first place after a short program, she unsuccessfully skated an arbitrary program, but she had enough points to become a bronze medalist of the championship [4] . In an interview after the championship, Korpi said that she was overwhelmed with feelings on the pedestal. “After so much upheaval, I managed to win the medal again ... Of course, we can regret the missed opportunities to take first place, but, nevertheless ... one more step forward was made” [5] . Korpi said of her free program that she was certainly disappointed with her, however, thanks to the short program, which was simply brilliant ( aivan loistava ), she managed to enter the medalists. According to her, she is quite happy with this and is unlikely to remember how many years she got this medal [6] . It was planned that her preparation for the World Cup would include, among other things, a two-week work with a choreographer in Toronto ( Canada ), associated with some adjustment of the programs [6] . At the World Championships (due to be held in Tokyo at the end of March, however, due to the earthquake and tsunami in Japan , and then the accident at the Fukushima nuclear power plant, he was moved to Moscow and went from April 25 to May 1). both in short and in free program. For the short program, Korpi received 55.09 points, which is more than nine points lower than her best result. At the same time, in the free program, she showed her best result in her career (109.71), which is a point higher than her previous best result, which she showed at the Olympic Games in Vancouver . Her total points (164.80 with the best career amount of 169.74) allowed her to take 9th place, which was a repeat of her previous greatest success at the world championships (she took 9th place at the 2008 World Championships in Gothenburg ) [7]
About the 2010/2011 season, Korpi said that he may have become the best in her sports career [8] .
Season 2011/2012
Korpi said in an interview that the new season for her will begin in June, when she goes to Toronto to put on a new free program [8] .
In January 2012, at the European Championships in English Sheffield, after a short program, Korpi was in second place; in a free program, despite some errors, she managed to stay second, second only to Carolina Costner [9] . Korpi refused to participate in the World Cup (Nice, March 25 - April 1) due to a leg injury [10] .
Season 2012/2013
In November, at the Grand Prix series tournament in Moscow , Korpi took first place, while showing the best results in her career, both in the free program and in the sum of two programs [11] .
This season, Korpi was able to get into the final part of the Grand Prix Series for the first time in her career (she also became the first Finnish figure skater who managed to do this). In the final competitions held in Sochi , Korpi was able to take only fourth place, losing to two Japanese women, Suzuki and Assad , as well as American Wagner . Despite this, Korpi herself was pleased with her performance, since, according to her, it was important for her to get to Sochi to try out the new Olympic arena, in addition, in her opinion, “the free program was not perfect, but completely clean” [12 ] .
In mid-December, at the national championships held in Joensuu , Korpi became the first for the third year in a row [13] . However, in February, Korpi, due to Achilles tendon inflammation, decided not to participate in the European Championships in Zagreb and in the World Championships in Canadian London [14] .
Season 2013/2014
In August 2013, Korpi began training under the leadership of Rafael Harutyunyan [15] .
On September 10, during a pre-season training session at ( California , USA), while performing the jump, Korpi received a partial rupture of the Achilles tendon on her left leg, after which she returned to Finland for further examination and rehabilitation [15] [16] . Julia Turkkila went to the Nebelhorn Trophy tournament in Oberstdorf , in which she was supposed to take part in late September [15] . In late October, Korpi reported that recovery was slow and she would probably start training on ice only in December, which precludes her participation in the Sochi Olympics . At the same time, she hoped that she would manage to recover in time for the 2014 World Cup in March [17] , but this did not happen.
Season 2014/2015
In this season, Korpi trained under the guidance ofCarlos de Borba [18] .
Many were sure that after a serious injury Kiira would not return to the big sport, but the Finnish figure skater recovered after a year and a half and again went to the start in December 2014 at the Croatian Zagreb Golden Horse tournament in 2014 , where she managed to win first place [19 ] . In December, Korpi won the national championship , thus becoming the five-time champion of Finland. After the short program, she was in fourth place at the European Championships , but was forced to withdraw from the competition due to food poisoning [20] . At the World Championships in Shanghai, Korpi performed extremely unsuccessfully: falling in the short program after the first jump, she also disrupted several subsequent jumps and combinations, as a result, taking only 31st place, she could not qualify for a free program [21] .
At the end of the season, she continued to train and was declared for one of the stages of the Grand Prix. However, at the end of August, Kiira decided to complete her performances in sports [22] .
