Biography
At Boston University, he received a master's and doctoral degree. At the same university he taught political science from 1964 to 1970.
Activities
Proposed and coined by him, the term vexillology in 1958 in his article “ Flags of the Arab World ”, covers all aspects of the scientific analysis of flags. In 1961, Smith and his colleague Gerhard Grahl founded Flag Bulletin , the world's first flagship magazine. The following year, Smith opened the Flag Research Center in Winchester, Massachusetts . A few years later, Smith takes part in the creation of the International Vexillology Organization ( FIAV ). In 1965, together with his colleagues, he organized the first International Vexillological Congress , which was held in Holland. In 1969 he created the North American Vexillology Organization.
Smith was the editor of Flag Bulletin, published twice a month (ISSN 0015-3370).
Whitney Smith is the author of 27 books on the vexillological topic.
He participated in the creation of the flag of Guyana and the unused flag of Antarctica .
