Appearance
Quite a large dog with hard wool. It was originally bred for hunting, and therefore has a strong and strong body, long muscular legs, which allows it to withstand greater physical exertion. Otterhound weighs from 36 to 52 kilograms [1] . Otterhounds have a good nose. By their nature, they are very friendly [2] with a unique bass voice [3] .
Hunting
Otterhound can successfully chase game both on water and on land. From this point of view, it has truly unique characteristics, especially due to its greasy, tough double-layer wool and strong webbed feet.
The use of otterhounds in otter hunting on the trail was discontinued in England after 1978, when the otters were banned from killing otters, and then otterhouses were hunted for mink and nutria .
Health
Representatives of the breed live about 10-13 years, a case is known when the dog has lived for 16 years. Otterhoundam requires a lot of physical activity and regular exercise, of course they can exist without them, but turn into fat, awkward dogs, most of the time spending in a dream. They can be kept in a family, however it is preferable that this is a private house, as they are able to jump out of windows even from the 5th floor.
This breed is endangered.
Now [ when? ] In the world there are only about a thousand of Ocht upons, about 350 of them are in the USA . Even in the early 1920s, when the otter hunt was the most popular, the otterhounds were few. They belong to the most rare, endangered breeds of dogs, in 2006 only 51 puppies were born. The facility is on the list of endangered national breeds [4] , compiled by the English Kennel Club, and now everything possible is being done to preserve this breed.
