Ecology and distribution
It is found in the river basins of the Don , Dnieper and Volga .
It grows in the river sands.
Botanical Description
A shrub with more or less developed infertile shoots , sometimes forming turfs. Flower-bearing stems oblique, 10-35 cm high, thick, rather densely leafy.
The lower leaves are from oblong to oblong-lanceolate, 2-5 mm long, about 1 mm wide. The middle stem leaves are narrowly linear-awl-shaped, spiky, with the edges turned on the lower side; bracts oblong-lanceolate, 1.5-3 mm long, about 0.5 mm wide, smooth.
Panicled inflorescence . Flowers on its final branches are two or three, rarely solitary, almost sessile or on legs up to 1-1.5 mm long; corolla 3.5-4.5 mm long, funnel - shaped, with oblong cavity bent outward, almost equal to a tube.
Fruits 3-4 mm long, densely covered with dull or dull scales.
It blooms in June - August. The fruits ripen in August - September.
Meaning and Application
The aerial part of the plant contains tannins , bitterness , resins , coumarins , essential oil , ascorbic acid , and fatty oil .
The plant has a pleasant spicy-gingerbread smell, spicy and bitter taste, used for flavoring fruits, flavoring tobacco and clothing. It is used in industry in the production and aromatization of alcoholic beverages , wine . The leaves of woodruff are usually added to the culinary products as a whole, and not in finely chopped form. Slightly withered leaves are only briefly dipped in a dish. After this procedure, the taste of fruit salads , sweet soups and lemonade becomes thinner.
The plant is popular in folk medicine - it was used inside as a sedative , for insomnia , tachycardia , as a diaphoretic , bile - and diuretic , for urolithiasis , skin diseases associated with metabolic disorders, as astringent and fastening; externally - for washing, lotions , compresses for skin diseases, ulcers and wounds .
An overdose should not be allowed when ingested, since the plant has toxic properties.
