The administrative center is the city of Vetluga .
Geographical location
Vetluzhsky district is located in the northern part of the Nizhny Novgorod region, it borders with the Varnavinsky , Urensky , Shakhunsky districts of the Nizhny Novgorod region, as well as with the Kostroma region .
The area of the district is 299,200 hectares .
District History
Vetluzhskaya land is located in the west of the Mari Territory and has a rich historical past, see History of the Powet .
The city of Vetluga originates from the village of Shchulepnikovo, the first mention of which in history dates back to 1606 , later at the beginning of the XVIII century it was renamed the village of Verkhnyaya Voskresenskoye. With the improvement of the administrative division of Russia, when new county centers were created, on the recommendation of the actual secret adviser to the Governor-General Alexei Petrovich Melgunov , on September 5, 1778, by the highest decree of Empress Catherine II, the village was given the status of the county town of Vetlug Kostroma governorship and the coat of arms “in the first part of the shield part of the coat of arms of Kostroma: in the blue field the feed is galley with three lanterns and lowered stairs; in the second part, in a silver field - a bush of a tree of the wind, meaning the name of this city. Since 1779, Vetluga has been the center of one of the vast districts of Kostroma governorate, then Kostroma province . It included the modern Pyshchugsky , Sharyinsky and Ponazyrevsky districts of the Kostroma region , Tonshaevsky , Shakhunsky , Vetluzhsky and part of the Varnavinsky district of the Nizhny Novgorod region . Since 1922, Vetluga became the district center of the Nizhny Novgorod province, and then the Gorky Territory and the region.
September 12, 2000, the Law of the Nizhny Novgorod Region abolished municipalities in the territories of villages and village councils in the Vetluzhsky District: the village named after M. I. The climate of the region is temperate continental , with cold, rather snowy, winters and warm short summers. The average annual air temperature is +3.3 ° C. The coldest month of the year is January with an average temperature of −11.6 ° C with a decrease in different years to −30 ... -40 ° C, the warmest month of the year is July , the average air temperature is +18.4 ° C, maximum temperature in some years up to +40 ° C. The industrial sector of the regional economy is represented by the following enterprises:
- Vetlugahleb OJSC (production of bread and bakery products),
- MUE "Agrofirma-Vetluga" (meat processing, production of sausages and bakery products),

The total forest area of the Vetluzhsky district is 225 thousand hectares, the forest cover of the district is 72%. The total timber stock is 35 million m³, of which ripe and mature 6 million m³, including 2 million m³ of coniferous species.
Among the mineral deposits in the region there are reserves of clay and peat , underground lakes of medicinal-table water. The clay deposit for brick production is located on an area of 31,000 m² with a useful thickness of 96,000 m³. Peat reserves in the region exceed 22 million tons.
There are 5 mineralized groundwater sources in the area. At the base of well No. 2 in Vetlug, the Vetluzhskaya mineral water is bottled, having the chemical composition: sulfates , calcium , bicarbonates , chlorides , potassium ; mineralization - 2.8-5.2 g / dm³.
- Transport
The length of paved roads in the region exceeds 312 kilometers . In the meridional direction, the district crosses the regional highway Uren - Kotlas . In addition, the district has direct communication with the Shahun and Varnavinsky districts. All of the above contributes to the development of trade and economic relations not only with the regions of the Nizhny Novgorod region, but also with the territories of the Kostroma, Kirov and Vologda regions. The length of bus route lines: urban - 19.3 kilometers; suburban - 413.1 kilometers; Intercity - 141.3 kilometers.
Culture and Education
There are 16 schools in the district, including 9 secondary schools, 4 basic schools, 1 primary, 1 primary school — kindergarten, 1 special (correctional) boarding school, and 13 pre-school educational institutions.
Vetluzhsky and Kalininsky houses of children's creativity, a center of children's technical creativity, and a children’s and youth club of physical training work in the region.
In Vetluga, the Catherine and Trinity Church operate, in the village named after Kalinin - the Orthodox religious community in the name of St. Seraphim of Sarov, in the village of Turani - the St. George Church.
