History
The territory of the commune is inhabited since the Stone Age , which confirms the presence of petroglyphs . In the pre-Christian era, here was one of the most famous sacred sites of the Vikings.
Steinkjer suffered greatly as a result of the bombing of the Luftwaffe on April 21, 1940, and therefore the post-war buildings in the functionalist style prevail in the modern buildings of the city.
Geography
The city is located on the northern tip of the Trondheim Fjord . The commune is bordered in the north by the Upperhall, Namsos and Namdalseid communes, in the east by the Demolition commune, in the south by Verdal , and in the west by the Verran and Innerey communes .
On the territory of the commune is the geographical center of Norway .
The climate is temperate oceanic, with cool summers and mild winters, with abundant precipitation.
Transportation
The E6 ( Trelleborg (south of Sweden ) - Norway’s border with Russia ) passes through Steinkjer. The Nordlandsbanen railway connects Steinkjer with Trondheim and Bodø .
