Montage of views of the Planoise area

Planoise ( French Planoise ) - the largest area of the French city of Besancon . Located in the west of the city and covers approximately 2.5 km². On its territory live more than 21 thousand people, which is about 17% of the population of Besancon. Due to high-rise buildings, the population density in Planoise reaches 8,700 people per square kilometer.

History

Archaeological excavations on the territory of today's Planoise have revealed the remains of the first inhabitants of this area, who came here more than 3000 BC.

At the beginning of the 20th century, agriculture was the main industry in the region around Besancon. After two world wars, the hostilities of which practically bypassed today's Planoise side, a strong population growth led to the decision to build a new housing estate. Construction work lasted from 1962 to 1985, but the first tenants were based in Planoise already in 1968. During the 1970s, many shops, a church and a school appeared in the area. In 1977, the population of Planoise was 12 thousand people.

Beginning in the second half of the 1980s, economic and social problems typical of French new buildings of that time began to increase in the area. About 40% of the population aged 18 to 25 were unemployed.

During the riots of 2005 in France, Planoise became one of the centers of events. One of the buildings, called the Forum, was set on fire, in a fire in which Sala Gaham died. In 2007, an armed attack was committed by minors on a bus driver, which led to a strike by drivers. [1] Two years later, a 14-year-old boy attacked a policeman who arrived on call, which led to a mass brawl between residents of the district and law enforcement officers. [2]

Geography

Planoise is located in the west of Besancon and is located between two hills - Planoise (490 m) and Rosemon (466 m). A tributary of the Sona Du flows over the area of the district; forests begin outside the city.

The district itself, in turn, is divided into seven so-called sectors:

  • Île-de-France
About 7 thousand people live in this microdistrict, built in 1967. It is considered the most central in Planoise, but also the most problematic in terms of unemployment and crime.
  • Époisses
Excavations were carried out in this part of the city, as a result of which it was determined that people lived here already 5 thousand years ago
  • Cassin
Named after lawyer and politician Rene Cassin
  • Hauts-de-chazal
It is under construction since 2002. The local hospital is located in this area.
  • Châteaufarine
The commercial center of Planoise, in which there are two large shopping centers and many shops
  • Malcombe
  • Micropolis
