History

Williams FW26 Montoya at the 2004 US Grand Prix .

The team retained all the main engineers, combat pilots and BMW engines. After a rather successful last year, high hopes were associated with the new season. In the new car, a radically new aerodynamic package was tested. It implied a conversion in the front to increase airflow to the bottom of the car. A new front suspension of the two-keel principle has been specially developed. This solution was invented by the designers of Sauber , later, in addition to Williams, implemented in McLaren and Jordan . For its unusual appearance, the FW26 was nicknamed the " Walrus ". The new BMW P84 engine was built on the basis of its predecessor, taking into account the necessary changes under the regulations. Now one engine had to go through one weekend, so its resource was increasing. However, this conversion had practically no effect on the dimensions of the motor and allowed to continue to increase the performance of the motor.

Juan Pablo Montoya showed excellent results in pre-season tests. The Colombian was considered one of the favorites of the upcoming championship. But in fact, it turned out that the Williams FW26 is inferior not only to the dominant Ferrari F2004 , but also to the Renault R24 with BAR 006 . The failure was especially noticeable in the middle of the season: Montoya constantly finished only in the lower half of the points, and Schumacher got into a severe accident in Indianapolis and missed several stages. Substitute test pilots Mark Genet and Antonio Pizzonia could not perform with dignity, although the Brazilian was able to score a few points. The team was hit hard by the disqualification at the Canadian Grand Prix . Pilots finished second and fifth, but were excluded from the protocols, as the brakes did not comply with technical regulations.

Toward the end of the season, at the Hungarian Grand Prix , a version with a traditional bow solution appeared. This gave the team and pilots an impetus, so the results have grown. Montoya was able to win in Brazil after a tight fight with Raikkonen , and returning Schumacher won the podium on Suzuka .

Despite this, Williams took only 4 place in the Cup of Designers , which was the worst result since 1999. At the end of the season, both pilots left the team. But more important was the departure of Patrick Head from the post of technical director. Head held this post since 1977, since the creation of the team. The new CTO is Sam Michael .
