Content
History
Ralph Schumacher spent the third season with the British team, and each year his teammate changed. This time they became the test pilot of the team, the champion of Formula 3 and the CART series Juan Pablo Montoya . Michelin tire company returned to Formula 1, and it was Williams who became their first major customer.
In general, Williams FW23 turned out pretty fast: a powerful engine, a decently arranged chassis, good tire performance in hot weather. The weekend in San Marino became the most significant for the team in 2001. Firstly, Ralph Schumacher won the first victory in his career, as well as the first victory of the team since 1997. Secondly, this was the first victory of the Williams-BMW alliance. And thirdly, Michelin also celebrated the first victory after returning to Formula 1. In total, pilots won 4 victories.
However, Williams was not capable of more. High-speed engines, although they were smaller and lighter than their predecessor, did not differ in reliability, and the pilots, especially Montoya, were not stable. There were more gatherings than finishes. In addition, the Williams FW23 was not fast on the tracks with many turns, where you need a lot of downforce, such as Monaco or Hungaroring. Nevertheless, the team took third place in the Cup of Designers , the backlog from McLaren was not so big, but Ferrari was far ahead.
