The city of Gbarnga is located in the northeastern part of Liberia, on the Jow River, 170 kilometers northeast of Monrovia , the capital of the country, and not far from the state border with Guinea . The population is 34.046 people (as of 2008 , the second largest city in Liberia). The majority of the population are representatives of the kpelle people, as well as mandingos .
The city has enterprises for the processing of chicken meat and rubber. During the First Civil War in Liberia, the city was severely damaged, as the headquarters of the Liberian National Patriotic Front under the leadership of Charles Taylor was located here. The college and the African Museum located near the city were also destroyed and looted.
