About the album
The album is named after the god of military valor Tür from Scandinavian mythology . The instrumental composition “The Battle of Tyr” and two songs on the second side of the album - “In Odin's Court” (“At Odin’s Court”) and “Valhalla” (“ Valhalla ”) are musically and thematically related and are dedicated to Norse mythology and the Vikings . Nevertheless, due to the presence on the album of songs on a different theme, this disc cannot be called conceptual . In the lyrics “Anno Mundi” (“Year of the World”) and “Jerusalem” (“ Jerusalem ”), medieval themes and paraphernalia were used to tell about the socio-political problems of our time. In the overall picture of the sound, the role of drums by Cozy Powell and keyboards by Jeff Nichols is significant.
After the release of the album, the album caused conflicting ratings. Critics and listeners often noted the seriousness of the themes of the songs and the severity of the sound of the album compared to the previous works of the group [1] , the influence of the music and themes of Richard Wagner’s operas on the style of the album [2] . To other listeners, “Tyr”, on the other hand, seemed a bit lightweight in work [2] .
In support of the album, the single “Feels Good to Me” was released (with a live version of the song “Paranoid” on side B recorded during concerts in Moscow in 1989) and a video clip with the same ballad [3] , as well as a concert tour. Concert recordings are published only on bootlegs [4] .
