Being largely self-taught, from 1797 he taught drawing in Viennese schools. In 1815 he was elected to the Vienna Academy of Fine Arts , since 1816 he taught there (among his students, in particular, Ferdinand Georg Waldmüller ). Shedlberger’s own style was noticeably influenced by the work of copying the paintings of Claude Lorren and Jacob van Reisdal , as well as the Italian journey of 1817-18, under the influence of which he finally formed as a landscape painter, prone to portray highly idealized landscapes. Landscapes were very successful, including among his august patrons, Franz II and Ludwig of Bavaria .
