Before the 1968 Olympic Games, Heglin did not have any significant success in the international arena. At the World and European Championships, he did not occupy prizes.

At the 1968 Winter Olympics in Grenoble, Höglin unexpectedly became the Olympic champion at 10,000 meters for many, exceeding the time of the recognized favorite Fred Anton Mayer by 0.3 seconds. At distances of 1500 and 5000 meters Höglin took fifth places.

Junni Hoglin also participated in the 1972 Winter Olympics in Sapporo . He took only 9th place at a distance of 1500 meters and twelfth at a distance of 5000 meters.
