Lions [1] [2] [3] ( lat. Stratiomyidae ) is a rather large family of dipterans insects , numbering about 2800 species.

Description
The body is flattened, often painted in bright colors (often with a metallic sheen), also have thin transparent wings and have peculiar antennae (having a ring-shaped last segment).
Ecology and habitats
Larvae develop in soil, manure, and rotting wood. The larvae are saturated with calcium carbonate and provide good protection for both the larvae and the pupa , which forms inside the larvae.

Distribution
Meet everywhere. In the forests of the northern part of Eurasia , more than one hundred species are found.
