In the episode, the alien time traveler Doctor ( David Tennant ) and his companion Martha Jones ( Frima Agimen ) are in the past and from there try to warn the young woman Sally Sparrow ( Carey Mulligan ) through recordings on 17 unrelated DVDs about Weeping Angels, the purpose of which is to seize control of the Doctor TARDIS time machine. According to the scenario, the Doctor and his companion have very little screen time, therefore the episode belongs to the category “Doctor-lite” - these are the stories in which the Doctor and his companions are consciously assigned a secondary role in the plot [4] .

On the premiere day, the episode was watched by 6.62 million viewers in the UK [3] . The series received many positive reviews from television critics who praised the plot, the game of the actors, as well as the new monsters of the series. According to observers and according to the results of various surveys of viewers, “Don't Blink” is one of the best episodes in the history of “Doctor Who” [5] , and Crying Angels are one of the best monsters of the series and television. For the script for the series, Stephen Moffat received the BAFTA Craft , BAFTA Cymru [6] [7], and the Hugo Prize for Best Performance for Small Forms [8] . Actress Carey Mulligan for her role as Sally Sparrow received the "The Constellation Award" in the nomination "Best Female Performance in a 2007 Science Fiction Television Episode" [9] .

Story

2007 year In an old abandoned Western Drumlins mansion, a girl named Sally Sparrow and her friend Katherine Nightingale stroll. Katherine disappears, and at the same moment a young man knocks on the house, who sends Sally a letter written by Katherine. The letter dates back to 1987. In a letter, Katie reports that from an abandoned mansion she is in the past and asks Sally to beware of the statues of the Weeping Angels from this house. Before leaving, Sally picks up a small key that is held by one of the statues of angels.

Sally meets Katie's brother, Larry, and tells him that Katherine has gone on time. Larry dedicates the girl to the secret of the so-called " Easter eggs ", placed on 17 different DVD discs. This is a recording of a conversation of a person who calls himself Doctor. Moreover, this conversation is recorded in half - there are only replicas of the stranger. Larry gives Sally a printout.

Being completely confused about the disappearance of Katherine, Sally turns to Inspector Billy Shipton, who deals with the disappearance of people. He says that similar disappearances in Western Dramlins have become more frequent, and asks him to tell him everything she finds out. A detective leads Sally to the garage of the police station and shows a lot of cars abandoned near the mansion, whose engines were warm when they were found, and the strangest find was the blue police booth, which they could not open because they could not find a suitable key. They part, and then Sally recalls the key she found in an abandoned mansion, but the inspector has already disappeared. The girl gets a call to the hospital, where she meets a very aged and dying Billy, who tells her that he was inexplicably moved in 1969 when he tried to examine a police booth from the garage. The last thing he remembered was the statue of the Crying Angel that suddenly appeared next to him. Then Billy says that in 1969 he met a man who calls himself Doctor, and that the recordings with the Doctor on 17 DVDs were made by his recording company. Billy asks the girl to carefully read the list of DVDs.

Sally understands that the whole DVD is united by what she has, and together with Larry they come to Western Drumlins and watch the recordings. They really turn out to be a message for Sally, made in the form of the Doctor’s monologue with pauses for the interlocutor. Sally begins to speak with the Doctor and a complete conversation is obtained. Larry writes Sally's remarks, receiving the full text of the dialogue, which, as it turns out, is read by the Doctor. He explains that he is a time traveler, but his TARDIS time machine, which looks like a police booth, was kidnapped by the Weeping Angels and abandoned in 1969, where the Doctor was stuck without his booth. The doctor says that Sally must save the booth from the angels, otherwise they will absorb her energy and the sun will go out. The doctor says that Crying Angels can only move if no one is looking at them; when they look, they turn to ordinary stone statues. Since the angels move very fast, the Doctor asks Sally: “Don't blink.” At this moment, Sally and Larry see the silhouette of the statue of the Crying Angels in the window. The chase begins.

With great difficulty, Sally and Larry get to the TARDIS and close in it. Weeping angels try to penetrate the time machine and begin to swing it. The Doctor’s holographic recording tells him to insert the DVD into the panel, the girl does it and the booth begins to disappear. Sally and Larry are surrounded by angels, but they immediately realize that the danger has passed: the angels looked at each other and therefore were petrified forever.

A year passes. Sally and Larry have their own store. Larry wants to start a relationship with Sally, but the girl never ceases to wonder where the Doctor got information about these events. While Larry has gone for milk, Sally sees the Doctor and Martha Jones in the window. The doctor does not recognize Sally and then the girl understands that the Doctor received all the information about what happened from her, because he is a time traveler. Larry comes back and watches what is happening. The doctor and Martha are in a hurry, Sally verbally expresses her gratitude, warning and record of the dialogue. After that, she and Larry again went into the store, but already holding hands, hinting that she was now ready for a relationship.

The final scene is the re-display of the Doctor’s warning “Do not blink” mixed with frames of different statues.

Scripting

You must remember that the fear of the dark and the fear of monsters are mostly exposed to children. The nursery is always shrouded in horror ... Adults never grow out of their childhood fears. They just are in other parts of our heads. Doctor Who, which is not a children's program, remains a program for children. And many, many adults watch and love him like something like Harry Potter .
- Stephen Moffat about writing Doctor Who episodes in the horror genre [10] .

Steven Moffat , screenwriter for the Do Not Blink episode

The Do Not Blink script was written by Stephen Moffat . Part of the story is based on Moffat’s story about the Ninth Doctor , “What I did on the Christmas holidays“ Sally Sparrow ”( “ What I Did on My Christmas Holidays ”By Sally Sparrow” ), published in Doctor Who Annual in 2006 [3 ] . The short story is presented as a home essay by 12-year-old Sally Sparrow, who finds evidence of a Doctor from the past at her aunt’s house during one of her visits. The story includes several elements that are reused in Don't Blink, including messages under the wallpaper and ontological paradoxes in a conversation between Sally and the Doctor when the latter’s speech was recorded on video based on a written transcript of the essay itself. There are significant differences in the stories. So, in the story there are no Crying Angels, and the Doctor moved to the past twenty years ago due to a malfunction of the TARDIS and wants Sally to send a time machine to him [11] .

Moffat adhered to the idea of Weeping Angels since he saw an angel statue in a cemetery during a family vacation. He planned to use angels for the episodes “ Silence in the library ” and “ Forest of the Dead ”, united by a common plot. However, after Helen Raynor finished working on the scripts for the episodes “ Far from Manhattan ” and “The Evolution of the Far ”, also united by the same plot, Moffat volunteered to write the Doctor-lite episode and decided to use the Weeping Angels in it [12] . Moffat was also inspired to write “Don't Blink” with the popular children's game “ Statues ” [13] , which he considered “intimidating” [14] . The composer of the series Murray Gold later compared the Weeping Angels with moving animals, in the form of which the bushes of plants from the horror novel 1977 Shine by Stephen King were trimmed [15] .

“Do not blink” is the third storyline of the Doctor Who series, which was revived in 2005, which was not based on the original script, but the story about the Doctor was adapted from a different form. The first such story was “ Dalek ”, the scriptwriter Robert Shirman used the main prerequisites of the story, as well as some scenes and dialogues from his 2003 audio drama “Anniversary” [16] . The second adapted plot served as the basis for the episodes of " Human Nature " and " Blood Family ". The screenwriter Paul Cornell used his 1995 novel, Human Nature, to write them. [17]

The Do Not Blink series is a Doctor-lite episode, since the Doctor and his companion have very little screen time [4] . This situation allowed the crew to simultaneously produce two episodes of the series [1] [10] [18] - a process known as “double banking” [15] . Moffat stated that he felt relaxed when he wrote “Don't Blink” because the episode was classified as “Doctor-lite” [19] . Due to the busy schedule of production of the series, there was only one meeting to read the script of Moffat [15] .

Filming

Actress Carey Mulligan , Sally Sparrow

The Do Not Blink episode was directed by Hetty MacDonald. It was the first episode of Doctor Who to be shot by a female director after the episode of The Six of Doctor The Mark of the Rani, which was released in February 1985 [20] . Russell T. Davis , executive producer of the series, later noted that, in connection with MacDonald’s work, the episode contains some of the “most beautiful [visual effects] we have ever had” [15] . British actress Carey Mulligan was selected for the role of Sally Sparrow. According to her statement, she was delighted that she was in the series. At first, Mulligan was worried that David Tennant had too little screen time, but after the series went on air, the actress was satisfied with the final result [14] .

Filming of scenes in the garage of the police station and next to it took place in the building of the Coal Exchange and on Mount Stuart Square in Cardiff Bay on November 21, 2006 [21] . The Fields House Estate, located in Newport [14] [22], served as the Western Dramlins mansion. By the time the crew arrived, the house was already abandoned and was in decline. Moffat noted that the estate was “decorated very little” for filming and later called it the “most creepy house” that he had ever seen [15] . The building was named the same as the previous residence of the screenwriter in the late 1990s. One of the characters in the episode, Larry, calls it “ Scooby-Doo 's house”, which is a reference to the dilapidated mansions that were often visited by the heroes of the same show [23] . In the interesting facts section of the BBC website , it is noted that the 1969th, the time Marta, Doctor and Billy move, is the year of the first appearance on the air of the animated series Scooby-Doo, Where Are You! " [24] .

Initially, the producers considered the possibility for Michael Obiora to play both the young and the older versions of Billy Shipton. Nevertheless, it was decided that in the make-up he would look too unnatural, and Louis Mahoney was chosen to play the role of the elderly Billy. Obiora later had to re-sound his cues to match, as his London accent was different from Mahoney’s heavy pronunciation. Billy's remark about the improper size of the TARDIS window was introduced into the script by Moffat as a comic commentary on the discussion at the Outpost Gallifrey fan site forum in 2004 that the booth windows were too large [15] .

Effects

To give the Weeping Angels dress designs stiffness, the props technician Rob Mayor impregnated the fabric with fiberglass resin and then painted the resulting “dentures” [14] . Actresses Aga Blonska and Helen Thomas with the help of makeup and prostheses played the role of Weeping Angels, although they were never shown on the screen in motion [14] [25] . Actresses wore two different masks: one that depicted a calm facial expression, and the other with bare fangs [14] . Blonska later said that, despite the complexity of the costume, it was convenient to wear it [26] . The creators used digital special effects to show the Crying Angels frozen in the frame, as the actresses could not keep still [15] . Moffat was very pleased with the results of the work done, calling them "fantastic." Mulligan later described the effects as “very good” and “really creepy” [14] .

To create the effect of the Weeping Angels swinging the TARDIS, Mulligan and Robertson rushed from side to side in the scenery of the ship. At this time, the operator shook the camera in the opposite direction to the movement of the actors [14] . The scene in which the Doctor talks to Sally through additional DVD material was created by recording David Tennant's replicas with pauses in place of Mulligan's phrases. According to Moffat, such one-sided shooting made the work more “authentic” [15] .

Release

Show

The Do Not Blink episode was first broadcast in the UK on BBC One on June 9, 2007. In total, 6.62 million viewers watched it [3] . The episode had the lowest rating of all episodes of the third season of “Doctor Who” [27] , but received a rating index of 87 (“excellent”) [3] .

On June 23, 2007, a DVD ( Region 2 ) was released containing the episodes Do Not Blink, Human Nature, and The Blood Family [28] . On November 5, 2007, he was reissued as part of the full assembly of the third season of the show [29]

Critics' rating

Some critics called the episode one of the most powerful ever since actor David Tennant played the role of Doctor

The Do Not Blink episode received mostly high marks from critics. The Guardian 's Stephen Brooke called it a “wonderfully creepy episode” and “ultimately meaningful,” despite the “barely appearing Doctors and Martha” [30] . SFX columnist David Bradley rated him five out of five stars, noting that he should “go down in history as one of the most beautiful, scary, and smartest Doctor Who episodes ever to exist” [31] . Travis Fickett from the IGN website rated 9.1 out of 10 points, praising the opportunity given to the audience to get to know Sally Sparrow for a while, Mulligan’s strong acting, and the rest of the cast, calling their work “exceptional”. In conclusion, he noted: “It is hard to believe how much has been accomplished in such a short period of time. Several timelines intersect in history and a new, rather frightening enemy was defeated without the participation of the Doctor ” [32] . According to Ross Rudinger of Slant Magazine , “Don't Blink” is not only the best episode of Doctor Who, but also just a great episode in the genre of science fiction and horror, which allows it to be self-sufficient. Rudinger praised the fearsome concept of the Weeping Angels, as well as the “sensitivity of the characters and the story,” which was “quite confusing, given how much is happening in these 45 minutes.” [33] In 2008, The Daily Telegraph called the tenth episode the best in the series, noting that "the presence of the Doctor on the periphery adds threats" [34] .

Some critics considered the episode one of the most powerful in all that time that David Tennant played the role of Doctor. Matt Wales, from IGN, dubbed "Don't Blink" the sixth best episode with Tennant [35] , while Sam MacPherson of TVOvermind put the series in second place among the best episodes with Tenth Doctor [36] .In 2011, before the start of the screening of the second half of the sixth season of Doctor Who, the Huffington Post called Do Not Blink, one of the five most important episodes of the series that new viewers should watch [37] .

All-time scariest TV characters ) [38] . My Top 10 New Classic Monsters ), опубликованный в Entertainment Weekly [39] .

Актриса Кэри Маллиган за исполнение роли Салли Спэрроу удостоилась премии «The Constellation Award» в номинации «Best Female Performance in a 2007 Science Fiction Television Episode» [46] .

Impact

Best Story ) по результатам опроса Doctor Who Magazine [4] .

До премьеры седьмого сезона на канале BBC America были показаны четыре специальных эпизода «Доктора Кто», один из которых назывался «The Timey-Wimey Stuff of Doctor Who» [63] .
