Fight for the city of Zenkov
In early September 1943, during an offensive on the city of Zenkov, Senior Lieutenant Shcherbakov, despite the staff position of the first assistant to the chief of staff of the regiment, proved himself to be a skilled combat commander. When the commander of the 2nd battalion of the 358th rifle regiment was out of action, Arsenty Arsentyevich was sent to replace him. He organized a machine-gun company and reserve battalion and, personally leading the formed group, broke the resistance of the enemy and broke into the Zenkov railway station. With these actions, he ensured the success of other units to capture the city. For this success, the regimental commander, Lieutenant Colonel Bortnik, presented September 12th Senior Lieutenant Shcherbakov to the Order of the Red Star , but, despite the support of the division commander, the 38th Army commander Lieutenant-General N.Ye. Chibisov decides to change the award to the medal “For Courage” [ 2] .
Forcing the Dnieper and fighting for Kiev
In preparing the crossing of the Dnieper in the area of the Cossack Island, Senior Lieutenant Shcherbakov skillfully organized a collection of ferrying resources. On October 1, 1943, Shcherbakov mobilized the population of Gnedyn village to complete the task . In total, 18 boats and 4 rafts were repaired. By the night of October 2, the Shcherbakovs gathered up to 30 boats in the adjacent settlements, which allowed the regiment to force the river successfully that night. Arsentiy Arsentievich under heavy enemy fire led the regiment crossing. During October 2, it provided uninterrupted supply of the regiment on the bridgehead with ammunition, food, and evacuation of the wounded to the left bank of the Dnieper. At the same time provided control of the battalions in the captured bridgehead. On October 3, he actively participated in repelling numerous counterattacks of the enemy, and by personal example carried the fighters along for himself [3] .
After the transfer of the 136th rifle division to the Lyutezhsky bridgehead (30 kilometers north of Kiev ), the first assistant to the chief of staff of the regiment Shcherbakov again showed himself as a battalion commander. After wounding the commander of the 1st battalion Arsenty Arsentevich headed the battalion.
On October 13 and 14, the battalion under his leadership repulsed numerous enemy attacks and subsequently advanced 5 kilometers, destroying a large number of opposing forces [3] .
For these actions, First Assistant Chief of Staff of the 358th Regiment, Senior Lieutenant A. A. Shcherbakov was presented on October 22, 1943 to the rank of Hero of the Soviet Union . Then A. A. Shcherbakov actively led the battalion in the attack on the city of Kiev. By his decision, he sent the 1st battalion to the Svyatoshino station, while simultaneously giving orders for an offensive to two battalions of the regiment. Thanks to these actions, the suburb of Kiev in the area of the Bolshevik plant was busy an hour and a half earlier. During the pursuit of the enemy, he organized an equestrian group, from which he captured several enemy transports and was the first to rush into the village of Shcherbanovka . Having occupied the village of Zhukovka, the battalion led by Shcherbakov cut off from the main forces near the enemy battalion. When trying to break through to the village of Zeremye, the enemy was completely destroyed. In these battles Arsentiy Arsent'evich repeatedly showed personal courage. For example, with one Red Army man, he dispersed the enemy's convoy of seven wagons and seized a tanker truck. Pursuing the enemy, he pulled himself forward a distance of up to 8 kilometers and passed on important information to the command [4] .
For his courage and heroism, Lieutenant Shcherbakov was introduced to the Order of the Red Banner by the commander of the 358th regiment, Lieutenant Colonel Bortnik [4] .
