Career
Steve James became a professional and got into a main tour in 1986 after winning a special series of tournaments in which ten qualified amateurs played a match for a place in the round against ten lowest- rated professionals.
The peak of James's career came in the early nineties. In 1990, he won the Mercantile Credit Classic tournament , beating Warren King 10: 6 in the final. The following season, he took a record 7th place in the world rankings . On April 14, 1990, at the 1990 World Championships in a match against Alex Higgins, James made a historic break , scoring 16 nominal red and 16 color ones and bringing the series to a logical conclusion with total clearance. When building a break, he used a free ball.
At the 1991 World Cup Championships, Steve James defeated Stephen Hendry , who defended his title, 13:11. But in the semifinals, he lost to Jimmy White .
James is the only snooker player who managed to make two century-breaks in his debut match in Krusible (that is, in the final stage of the World Cup).
