Ship history
Laid at the New York Naval Shipyard on December 15, 1942 . Launched on February 28, 1944 . It was commissioned on August 6, 1944 .
He participated in the battles against Japan in the Pacific theater of operations , receiving 3 combat stars. November 8, 1946 withdrawn to reserve.
It was put into operation again on November 30, 1951 after modernization under the project SCB-27A. October 1, 1952 reclassified to CVA-20.
May 26, 1954 on the coast of the Atlantic coast of the United States on the ship an explosion occurred in the hydraulic system of one of the launching catapults . As a result of the fire started, the aircraft carrier was severely damaged; 103 crew members died, more than two hundred were injured [1] . Delivered for repairs, during which it was upgraded according to the project SCB-125, having received a corner deck. It was commissioned again in April 1955 and on June 30, 1959, reclassified to CVS-20.
Ness served in the Pacific as part of the 7th US Navy . In August 1960, collided with the destroyer "Edwards". Modernized under the FRAM program within the 1963 budget.
He took part in the war in Vietnam , being there in the following periods:
- February 20, 1964 to August 11, 1964
- March 22, 1965 to October 7, 1965
- from November 4, 1966 to May 23, 1967
- May 1, 1968 to November 9, 1968
On November 9, 1967, he took part in the search and rescue of the landing pilot of the Apollo-4 spacecraft. January 15, 1970 launched in reserve. It was written off on September 20, 1989 and in 1994 it was cut into metal.
