History
The aircraft carrier entered service on November 3, 1946. Unlike many sisterships, it was not withdrawn to the reserve, took an active part in the Korean War, made 4 trips to the shores of Korea:
- May 1 - December 1, 1950,
- December 6, 1950 - April 7, 1951,
- October 15, 1951 - July 3, 1952,
- November 20, 1952 - June 25, 1953.
It is noteworthy that only 5 days elapsed between the first and second trips that Valley Forge spent in San Diego. Since October 1, 1952, the ship was reclassified to an attacking aircraft carrier, received the CVA-45 index, a year later, on January 1, 1954, it was reclassified to an anti-submarine aircraft carrier, the CVS-45 index. During the Korean War, Valley Forge was awarded 8 battle stars. In February 1959, a severe storm hit the Atlantic Ocean, and the bow of the deck was significantly damaged.
During the repair, it was converted to a landing helicopter carrier, from July 1, 1961, it received the LPH-8 index. He took part in the Vietnam War, was awarded 9 battle stars.
Expelled from the fleet on January 15, 1970. At the beginning of 1971, Well Forge served as the film set for the movie Silent Run . Shortly after the shooting, in the same year, it was sold for metal cutting.
