World War I
He joined the army as a volunteer in June 1915, in the cavalry-rangers regiment in a place with his brother Paul (who later remained in captivity in Russia and became a communist there). From April 1917 - non-commissioned officer, from October 1917 - lieutenant of the reserve (that is, without the end of the military school). Awarded with Iron Crosses of both degrees.
Between the world wars
In May 1920, he was discharged from military service; in October 1920, he joined the police force with the rank of lieutenant.
In August 1935 he returned to military service, to cavalry - squadron commander, captain (captain). By the beginning of the Second World War - the commander of the intelligence battalion of the 11th Infantry Division, Major.
World War II
He participated in the Polish and French campaigns, was awarded with the bars to the Iron Crosses (re-award). Since November 1939 - Lieutenant Colonel.
On June 22, 1941 - participated in the German-Soviet war. Fighting near Volkhov. Awarded with the Golden German Cross. From August 1941, the commander of the infantry regiment of the 19th tank division, fighting in the Nevel district, then near Moscow. Since March 1942 - Colonel. In May 1942 he was awarded the Knight's Cross.
From August 1943 - commander of the 19th tank division , from November 1943 - Major General. In February 1944 he was awarded for fighting in the area of Zhytomyr Oak leaves to the Knight's Cross. From June 1944 - Lieutenant General. For battles in Western Ukraine and in the Warsaw area in October 1944, he was awarded with Swords (No. 106) to the Knight's Cross with Oak Leaves.
From March 1945 - Commander of the 24th Tank Corps . April 18, 1945 died on the front lines in the Czech Republic.
