In the early 1950s, he became one of the leading US chess players. As part of the US team, he participated in 9 Olympiads ( 1952 - 1978 ), including at the 1960 Olympics he took 2nd place on the 3rd board (after P. Keres ). Member of the matches of the USSR - USA ( 1954 and 1955 ). In 1960 he won the U.S. Open Championship. In the late 1960s, he devoted himself to chess, leaving teaching activities. Champion of the USA ( 1972 ); won the match-tournament against S. Reshevsky and L. Kavalek . Participant in several interzonal tournaments: Sousse ( 1967 ) - 18th; Leningrad ( 1973 ) - 3rd; Bill ( 1976 ) - 5-7th place. In 1974, he lost the quarter-final match of applicants in San Juan to B. Spassky - 1½: 4½ (+0 −3 = 3).
The best results in other international competitions: Mar del Plata ( 1961 ) - 2-5th; Santa Fe (1961) - 1st; Buenos Aires (1964) - 3rd; Sarajevo (1967) - 5-6th; Monte Carlo ( 1968 ) - 5th; Reykjavik (1968) - 4th; Moscow ( 1971 ; A. Alekhine Memorial) - 8th; Hastings (1971/1972) - 3-4th; Torremolinos (1976, 1977 ) - 1st and 2nd; Las Palmas (1976) and Baden ( 1980 ) - 3-4th; Harare ( 1983 ) - 1-2 places.
