Creation History

Mark Millar called the idea of the comic book “very autobiographical”:

When I was 15, I and my best friends read out Frank Miller comics such as Batman: Year One . We did this when it was necessary to prepare for exams. We wanted to be superheroes like Batman . It was a miserable sight. The story of Kick-Ass is actually about what would happen if we had not come to our senses and realized our dream [2] .

Story

Dave Lizewski is an ordinary 16-year-old teenager, a student of one of the schools in New York . Not a "nerd" and not a traitor, he is not popular with girls. Dave is a big fan of comics. Once he wonders why there are no superheroes in the real world, and decides to fix it. Dressed in a green diving suit and mask, he takes to the streets of the city to fight crime, but his very first outing ends in disrepair: he gets involved in a fight in which he gets stabbed and in addition, he is hit by a car [3] .

After a long time of treatment and a course of rehabilitation, Dave leaves the hospital with three metal plates in his head that slightly exaggerate his pain threshold, and with the firm intention to engage in a superhero career. However, when he returned home, he soon put on his suit again and went out into the streets. By chance, he saves a stranger from a gang of robbers. One of the witnesses of the fight records what is happening on the cell phone camera [4] .

The video goes to YouTube and breaks all records in terms of the number of views. Scuffle (such a pseudonym Dave takes for himself) becomes a sensation in just 24 hours [5] . Dave creates a superhero page on MySpace so that anyone who needs help can turn to Mordoba for it. His first mission was to talk with a certain Eddie Lomas, whose ex-girlfriend complained to the hero about threatening calls from Eddie. In fact, Lomas turns out to be a petty mafia, and Dave gets into an apartment full of gangsters. A fight ensues, and the life of Mordoboy is in jeopardy. Suddenly, a little girl appears in the apartment in a superhero costume, armed with two samurai swords, called Heath-Girl. She alone kills Eddie and all members of his gang. A scuffle is trying to follow Heath Girl, but she manages to escape with a man named Big Daddy, also dressed as a superhero [6] .

Later, Dave finds out on the Internet that Mordoboy inspired a whole subculture of people portraying superheroes, but he does not find any information about Heath Girl and Big Daddy. Among the newly-minted superheroes, the most famous one is the Red Fog, who is credited with the victory over the Russian mafia and human traffickers. Dave dislikes him, as all the attention of the fans and the media has shifted to the Red Fog. The scuffle makes an appointment with the Red Fog. It turns out that the Fog did not perform any feats personally and that he became a hero, inspired by the actions of Mordoboy. Both heroes quickly became friends and became partners, patrolling the city on the so-called "Fog". On the very first evening of collaboration, they find themselves at a house in fire. One of the residents of the house asks the heroes to save Charlie who remains inside. The Red Fog considers this venture reckless, but Scuffle dares to enter the burning building, and his partner has to follow him. There, the characters find out that Charlie is just a little kitten. The building is crumbling. The scuffle and the Red Fog miraculously remain alive.

Lizewski returns home and with his father watches a reportage dedicated to Mordoba and the Red Fog, which together have become even more popular than individually. Later, Dave is visited by Heath-Girl and Big Daddy [7] , who intend to involve him in the operation to remove the drug lord John Genovase. It turns out that Big Daddy is a former policeman whose wife was killed by the mafia. He and his daughter Heath-Girl devoted their lives to the fight against crime by the most radical methods. Dave was presented with an ultimatum: either he, together with the Red Fog, joins a crazy couple, or the identity of Mordoboy will be revealed. The scuffle and the Red Fog are sent to an abandoned warehouse, where they were scheduled to meet. There they discover Heath Girl and Big Daddy captured by gangsters. Red Fog turns out to be the son of Genovaz, and his collaboration with Mordoboy was part of a plan to destroy superheroes [8] . Gangsters kill Big Daddy and torture Mordoboy. Heath-Girl manages to escape, but she later returns to avenge her father. [9] Scuffle and Heath-Girl kill the villains. The story ends with Hit-Girl going to school, and Dave Lisevsky confessing to his girlfriend that he is not gay, but she already has a boyfriend. But still there is someone they forgot about - the Red Fog.

Characters

Scuffle (Kick)

Real name is Dave Lisevsky . A sixteen-year-old student who decided to become the first superhero in real life. A scuffle wears a green and yellow scuba diver costume and is armed with two rubber batons. Dave considers himself a true superhero, although he does not have any superpowers (although after the first time he was beaten, the doctors put three metal plates in his head and his pain threshold slightly increased, which significantly increased his stamina in battle), nor fighting qualities. From this, every time he meets in a fight with bandits, he suffers. However, he is determined and believes in his cause. The scuffle from Big Papani and Heath-Girl is distinguished by the inability to kill a man: he can beat, but not kill.

Hit Girl (Killer)

Real name is Mindy McCready . First appeared in the third issue. The daughter of Damon McCready, raised by him as a superheroine. Heath-Girl is a skilled and cruel fighter. Unlike most girls of her age, she is interested in weapons and uses it pretty well. Indifferent to those whom it kills. Abusively, likes Hello Kitty products, comics, and Clint Eastwood and John Woo films. There are very few moments where she behaves like other girls of her age. Often shows himself much more mature than her crime counterpart Mordoba. Very decisive. An example of this is the scene in which Mordoboy tells her that her father was simply killed, she replies: "We will finish the work, we will mourn later." However, when John Genovese finally died, she turns to Mordoba and asks for a hug, covered in tears and blood. Artist John Romita Jr. commented on the character as follows:

I think what could happen to make a little girl so strong? And I compared (the girl’s father) with parents who turn their children into supersportsmen. Even against their will. They become limp athletes, almost completely. And it hardens them. Here it manifested itself in a similar way [10] .

Big Daddy (Dad)

Real name is Damon McCready . Depicted with a very harsh character, fearless and ambitious. A comic book fan who pretends to be a former policeman, whose bandits took his family away in the style of the Punisher [11] . In fact, he once worked as an accountant and led the life of a loser, whom his wife abandoned. He stole a little daughter and began to travel around the country, destroying criminal elements [12] . Resources he served as his own collection of rare comics, which he sold and purchased the necessary equipment.

Red Mist (Blood Burn)

Real name is Chris Genovase . At first he appears as a comic book fan inspired by Mordoboy to become a superhero, but then he turns out to be a traitor, the son of Genovaz, who rubbed his trust in Mordoboy to go to Big Daddy and Heath Girl. After the death of his father, he took the name "Mazafaker" and became a supervillain.

Criticism

Kick-Ass by Mark Millard and John Romita Jr. so ridiculous and struggles to challenge any healthy criticism of him.

Movie

In April 2010, the film "Kick-Ass" was released, in the Russian box office it was called "Kick-Ass". The main role was played by Aaron Johnson , the role of the Red Fog (in the Russian translation - Blood Burn) was played by Christopher Mintz-Plass , Heath-Girl (Killer) was played by Chloe Moretz , and Big Daddy (Papanu) - by Nicolas Cage . The storyline was based on the first volume and is significantly different from the original. For example, here that the Red Fog is a traitor, the viewer knows in advance, and his father’s name is changed to Frank D'Amico (played by Mark Strong ). Katie is not mad at Dave for lying and starts dating him, and Dave refuses the costume after the finale. The story of Damon and Mindy about the policeman and the mafia was not a fiction, and after the victory over D'Amico Mindy moves to his father's former partner.

The book aims to tell the most vulgar, ridiculous and cartoonishly violent superhero story ever committed to paper, and whether you're offended by its ideas and images or amused by them, it's impossible to deny that the series accomplishes everything it sets out to in its attempt to illicit a strong response from its readers. There's no middle ground here - you either find this stuff funny and entertaining or you don't. I do. "
