In 1973 and 1974, Sten Stensen became the Norwegian champion in speed skating all-around .

In 1973 and 1976, Sten Stensen ranked second in the world championship in speed skating .

In 1974, Sten Stensen won the title of world champion in speed skating all-around.

In 1975, Sten Stensen won the European championship title in speed skating, and in 1976 and 1978 he was second.

At the World and European Championships, Stensen won twelve gold medals at individual distances and was the winner twenty-five times.
